How to set up UTM tags

Why set up UTM tags?

By setting up UTM tags for Google Ads we can pass rich meta data and to our analytics destinations.

#1 Add tracking template on an account level

Go to Google Ads Account Settings. Under tracking add the UTM tracking template that you want to apply on an account level.

Copy paste the below template under tracking settings:

{lpurl}?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign={_campaign}&utm_content={_content}&utm_term={keyword}

The template uses two custom variables {_campaign} and {_content}. We need to set values for these variables at campaign and ad level.

#2 Update _campaign parameter values for campaigns

Go to settings on the campaign you want to edit and click on Campaign URL options (this is hidden under Additional Settings.

You'll need to setup a customer parameter named _campaign containing the URL encoded name of the Campaign.

#3 Update _content parameter values for ads

If you are using a variable for Ad name (i.e {_content} } You'll also need to set this on an ad or an ad group level. For each ad you want to track setup a parameter named _content containing the URL encoded title of the ad.
